Compliance landscape of the battery industry

We translate the entire spectrum – from research reports and patent specifications to BMS software, material safety data sheets (MSDS) and UN 38.3 transport test reports to compliance documents for the EU Battery Regulation, carbon footprint declarations and battery passport-relevant data. This also includes production instructions for Gigafactory equipment, patent specifications and investor communications.
A lot. The EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542 requires – depending on the battery type and market phase – labeling in all official languages of the member states in which the battery is sold. From February 2027, the Battery Passport will be added – machine-readable data on cell chemistry, origin of raw materials and carbon footprint. At the same time, due diligence reports and PCF declarations along the supply chain must be available in multiple languages. We recommend setting up a consistent terminology database at an early stage – we can help with this.
The Battery Passport will be mandatory for industrial batteries over 2 kWh and traction batteries from February 2027. Cell, module and pack data must be machine-readable and stored in multiple languages – origin of raw materials, cell chemistry, carbon footprint, recycling rates. We work with our customers to build consistent terminology databases for each battery model so that the data remains standardized, audit-proof and machine-readable in all required official EU languages. If you start now, you won’t have any stress in 2027.
Yes, battery management system interfaces, status messages, alarm texts and diagnostic codes are a separate discipline mix of software localization and electrical engineering. We work directly with XLIFF, JSON, PO/POT and proprietary export formats from embedded development environments. Character limits in embedded displays, plural rules in Slavic languages, encoding issues with Asian character sets – all familiar. Ideally, you provide us with the strings in the original format and we return them in the same format, ready to build.
In the European market: German ↔ English (industrial lingua franca), French, Spanish, Italian, Polish. In the Asian supplier context: Chinese (simplified), Korean and Japanese – the three most important native languages of cell manufacturers. For compliance documentation in accordance with the EU Battery Regulation, you often also need all 24 official EU languages. We offer 70+ languages with native-speaker specialist translators.
With two-stage workflows. For purely internal documentation (training courses, supplier correspondence), we offer AI-supported translation with post-editing in accordance with ISO 18587 – quickly and cost-effectively. For regulatory documentation (approvals, patents, safety data sheets), the classic workflow according to ISO 17100 with specialist translation plus dual control principle applies. For urgent orders, we work with experienced teams of translators for each language and deliver reliably even under time pressure.
Confidentiality is not a nice-to-have in the battery industry, but a prerequisite – whether for cell chemistry research, unprotected patent applications, BMS source codes or supplier audits.
