Transition to the EU Machinery Regulation 2023/1230

From 14 January 2027, the EU Machinery Regulation will replace the current Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. For intralogistics manufacturers, this means expanded documentation obligations and new requirements for cybersecurity and AI components in control systems. Digital operating manuals will also be permitted. Those still delivering documentation in 2026 should already be preparing 2027-compliant versions in parallel. Frequently asked questions about translation in intralogistics

Which languages are mandatory for intralogistics equipment in the EU machinery market?
The EU Machinery Regulation (until 2027, the Machinery Directive) stipulates that operating and safety documentation must be provided in the official language of the relevant member state. Therefore, a sorting system produced in Germany and delivered to Poland needs to have Polish documentation. For multilingual warehouse teams, there is also a practical need for operator interfaces in the warehouse operating languages, which are typically Polish, Turkish and Romanian.
Which standard applies to translating AGV and AMR documentation?
The central standard is ISO 3691-4 (Safety of driverless industrial vehicles, 2023 edition). This governs safety requirements, risk assessment and labelling, as well as the content that must be included in multilingual documentation. EN ISO 13849 applies in addition for functional safety, and EN ISO 12100 applies in addition for overarching risk assessment.
How do you translate HMI dialogues?
HMI translations differ from traditional documents in three ways: fixed character lengths per field, dynamic place holders in the code and close integration with the control logic. We work directly in your localisation files (XML, JSON or XLIFF), respect character length limits and check the interface in its target state. Multilingual voice scripts for pick-by-voice are also checked for suitability for voice output.
Can you translate PLC program code comments?
Yes, it is common for IEC 61131-3 programs: comments, variable naming and in some cases descriptions of the programme structure are made accessible for international service technicians. We extract the text relevant for translation from the program code, translate it using consistent terminology, and deliver it in a format that can be re-imported directly into your programming environment.

From 14 January 2027, the EU Machinery Regulation will replace the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.
