The language from the land of the three seas
Turkey
Good day –merhaba!
Turkey(Türkiye) has a population of about 82 million people and covers an area of 783,562 km². The country is located on the two continents of Asia and Europe, with 97% of Turkey being in Asia. Furthermore, Turkey borders the Aegean Sea, the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea. The great location and the warm climate as well as the fact that Turkey has 18 UNESCO World Heritage Sites and countless nature reserves make Turkey – not only among Germans – a popular holiday destination. The metropolis of Istanbul and other large cities with their rich history and culture are also a magnet for visitors.
The Turkish language
Turkish is the official language in Turkey and – in addition to Greek – also in Cyprus. A total of 63 million people in Turkey speak Turkish as their mother tongue. There are also countless speakers in Bulgaria, Greece and Germany, for example.
Turkish is not to be understood as a single language, but comprises many dialects. The dialect from Istanbul formed the basis for modern standard Turkish.
In 1928, the Latin alphabet was introduced in the Turkish language. Today the Turkish alphabet consists of 29 letters:
a, b, c, ç, d, e, f, g, ğ, h, ı, i, j, k, l, m, n, o, ö, p, r, s, ş, t, u, ü, v, y, z.
German-Turkish relations
German-Turkish relations have existed since the Middle Ages. In 1961, a recruitment agreement for guest workers between Germany and Turkey was concluded. As a result, many people from Turkey have travelled to Germany to work there. Due to the large number of guest workers, a large Turkish community developed in Germany. Thus, approximately 3 million people in Germany now have Turkish roots. In view of the many Turkish restaurants, bars, shops, mosques etc., Germans can enjoy a piece of Turkey in their country.
Germany is considered one of Turkey's most important export partners. The export hits come mainly from the automotive, machinery, textile, jewellery and petroleum industries.
